ABOUT US
Our Company
Philadelphia Carriage Company was established in 1975 on the eve of the Bicentennial
Celebrations here in Philadelphia, and became one of the first
carriage companies in the United States. Since then we have striven
to give our customers the best possible experience when visiting our
city.
Our Horses
All of our horses are draft horses and are purchased
in Amish Country in Lancaster County and south. These horses are powerful!
They are able to pull up to five times their own weight, and they
all weigh over 1,000 pounds. Our horses have a full time job working
no more than five days a week, and eight hours a day. Most get a
vacation in the winter time for about three months. They have
their own doctor and dentist.
Our Drivers
All of our drivers are certified by the City of Philadelphia and the National Park. The
training period lasts about two weeks, where they learn how to work
with and drive the horse and learn about the history of the
Independence National Park and its surrounding area. Our drivers
must groom and take care of the horse and make sure they are in good
health. They must also maintain their carriage and follow a dress
code.
Our Carriages
Our carriages are French
style. Vis-à-vis were used in the early 1800's by the
wealthy and royal class. You will also find that all of our
carriages are decorated subtly with flowers and lace etc..,
depending on the season or holiday. Our particular vis-à-vis
carriages have doors for added protection for children and toddlers.
This style of carriage is a convertible, so if it starts raining our
passengers stay dry.
